Fringe Festival Express

The SunRail station at Florida Hospital has been a bit of a disappointment.

Before SunRail launched last year many people anticipated that the Florida Hospital station would be one of the busiest stops in the SunRail system because it’s a major employment center

However mobs of riders never materialized. Don’t get us wrong, it’s not as though no one uses the station, but we thought there would be many more people boarding and getting off at Florida Hospital.

Part of the problem is that the SunRail’s rush-hour oriented train schedule doesn’t mesh well with the real-world work schedule for many Florida Hospital caregivers. Granted SunRail did tweak its schedule last year and that helped some, but ridership at Florida Hospital remains underwhelming.

Now there’s an opportunity to make the Florida Hospital station the busiest stop at SunRail – at least for the next two weeks.

Starting on May 13 The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival will be held at Loch Haven Park in Orlando, which is about a 5-minute walk from the Florida Hospital SunRail station.

The Fringe has been a Central Florida tradition since 1991. For those who have never attended, Fringe showcases original theatrical performances that are very innovative and sometimes edgy, although there are some performances produced for children. The performances last less than an hour. For more information on the show schedules, plot summaries, ticket prices and other details, click this link: http://orlandofringe.org/

It goes without saying that we like this location for Fringe because it’s so close to the SunRail station, but there’s also the added benefit that there are numerous wonderful places to eat and drink within walking distance in Ivanhoe Village, North Orange Avenue and on Mills Avenue.

Last year it was difficult for SunRail riders to attend Fringe because the weekday train service ended too early in the evening. However, now with the #NightTrain running it’s possible to stop off for Fringe after work and still get home on the train. Please note that the last northbound train departs the Florida Hospital station at 10:39 p.m. and the last southbound train departs at 9:48 p.m.

See you on The Rail, and at Fringe.
